How We Attach a Treehouse Without Harming the Tree
One of the most important things to get right on any treehouse build is how the treehouse attaches to the tree, without harming the tree in the process. It's something we take the time to think about at Treetop Co during the design phase, well before the build has begun. Where we can position our primary support beams within the branch spread of the tree determines where the hardware will connect to the tree, and vice versa, so for us, the shape of the tree directly influences what that particular treehouse design looks like.

These posts sit on top of concrete piles which are dug out in the root zone and can cause damage. We use the tree itself as the supporting structure to create treehouses which are genuinely held up by the tree. This is the going standard in the USA and becoming more widely adopted in Europe, but we are one of the few companies in the UK that use this system.”
The bolt that becomes part of the tree
The system we use is called a TAB, short for Treehouse Attachment Bolt, originally termed the "Garnier Limb" after Michael Garnier, the inventor. It's considered the industry standard for high-end treehouse construction, and it works by imitating something a tree already knows how to do.
A 30mm hole is drilled into the trunk, or limb, and the bolt is positioned in the interior wood, the part of the tree with no living cells left in it, so the impact on the tree is minimal. The bracket that carries the treehouse's weight attaches directly to this bolt.
Some brackets are fixed in place if the branch is large and won't move at all during high winds. Others, known as floating brackets, allow movement across 360 degrees on the horizontal plane, which is what makes the system so special, so the tree can continue swaying in the wind without that movement being transferred into the treehouse structure. The Gracious Treehouse still uses this system today, years after it was installed, with its tree continuing to grow and move freely.
From there, the tree responds to the implant in much the same way it would to a broken branch. It seals the wound, produces natural fungus-inhibiting compounds, and grows stronger wood around the area over time. Within a few years, the bolt becomes a permanent, load-bearing part of the tree itself.
It's precise work, and Luke, the founder of Treetop Co, has talked before about the level of focus this kind of building demands. Just as most carpenters focus closely when working with power tools because they don't want to lose a finger or get shards of wood in their eyes, we take the same care when working with a living tree. We use specialist equipment to ensure the TAB is installed dead level, at the appropriate depth into the bark so that none of the cambium layer is exposed (especially important when the trunk or branch isn't plumb), and so that it protrudes on the plane perpendicular to the beam that will sit on top of it. Getting the depth, angle, and placement right is what determines how well the tree responds.
Why cuffs and clamps aren't used
Another method sometimes used in treehouse construction is a steel cuff or clamp fitted around the trunk. Because nothing is drilled, it can look like the gentler option.
In practice, it works more like a belt. As the tree grows, the cuff needs to be loosened and readjusted regularly, or it starts to restrict the trunk underneath. Left unchecked, this can gradually cut off the flow of nutrients between the roots and the crown, and serious problems with this method tend to emerge after ten to twenty years, well after the original build is finished.
A TAB creates a wound, but it's a wound the tree is equipped to heal. A cuff avoids that wound but risks a slower, less visible kind of damage instead.
Choosing the right method for the tree
Not every tree suits the same approach. Species with thick, protective bark, such as oak or chestnut, can often support a cable suspension system, where the platform is held by tensioned steel ropes rather than a drilled bolt. Trees with thinner bark, like beech, are usually better suited to a TAB instead.
Where a tree's health or load-bearing capacity is in question, ground support can be used instead, using stilts or piles that take the weight off the tree entirely. Digging of the pits can damage roots, so if you see a treehouse held up with lots of posts going into the ground, you have to wonder: how many roots were cut through when the holes were being dug?
Where we do need to use a post going to ground, we opt for ground screws, which don't require digging. Before drilling, we carefully check the soil for root positions using a long, narrow drill bit, and if we find a root, the ground screw is relocated.
The philosophy behind it all
There's no single fastening method that works for every tree in every garden. Each one comes with its own trade-offs, and the right choice depends on the tree itself, its species, size, health, and how it's expected to grow over the years ahead.
What matters most is whether the tree will still be healthy in twenty years, treehouse or no treehouse.
